Nikki Michail

Gypsy filmmaker, photographer, events co-ordinator.

After completing a Bachelor of Film & Television at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University (QLD) in 2002, Nikki has undertaken a wide range of film and video projects, travelling nationally and internationally to do so. She has worked on both professional productions and community projects, and written/produced/directed numerous freelance films/ documentaries/ music videos.

While film and photography are her main focus, she is continually expanding her expertise in events co-ordination, and tour management/ promotions, in both film and music industries. She has co-ordinated two Australian music tours for American artist Beth Preston, and toured nationally with well known roots musician, Xavier Rudd. She has also worked in various capacities on other events and festivals, and is currently a creative director for the 'Island Time Reggae, Roots & Culture Festival’' (Stradbroke Island, QLD) specifically focusing on co-ordinating the Arts & Culture Program.

The spirit of the land, and amazingly diverse culture of Australia’s Indigenous people is also of great interest and inspiration for Nikki, who is currently based on K'gari (Fraser Island). She is continuing to build strong ties with the Indigenous community in this area, helping them to create film projects, events, promotions, etc.

She has also worked on projects with Sisters Inside, creating national resources for women in prison and their families. 2007 sees her working on ‘Outside the Square’, a circus-multi media event created by children of incarcerated women, both mentoring these youths and documenting the process to create a DVD.

Passionate about music, arts, community, culture, environment and travel, this 'gypsy filmmaker’' will continue to explore the world, expanding her social/ cultural understanding, creating more film projects and sharing her skills (mentoring young people in film, photography, and so on.) All current and future projects have a focus on creating positive changes for communities/ individuals through arts, cultural education, and re-establishing connections between people, land and spirit.
