Nayri Niara Festival

Lunnawunna alonnah, Bruny Island, Tasmania is rich in cultural, environmental and artistic heritage.  The Nayri Niara (Good Spirit) Festival explores and promotes the cultural diversity, innovation and creativity of this stunning remote island and its people. Hosting an amazing array of musicians, dancers, healers and teachers from across the globe to help celebrate this exceptional Country, the 2010 the Nayri Niara Festival (NNFest) will continue to create good music, good food, good yarns and good vibes.

The NN Fest is a powerful opportunity for Aboriginal community members of Tasmania to share their knowledge and ceremony.  The festival brings together people in celebration of this unique landscape in a supported sharing and caring atmosphere which welcomes all people, local, national and international.

This two day event on the 6th and 7th of February 2010 is held in bushland setting overlooking the tranquil Barns Bay.  Day One, Saturday the 6th, sees a collection of workshops and Day Two, Sunday the 7th will be a musical extravaganza with an abundance of local musical talent performing with headline musician’s Archie Roach, Ruby Hunter and Dave Arden. Other performers include Saritah, Penelope Swales,  JuRythum and Radio Fire. The Festival will climax with a shared creative performance ‘Sharing Country’ featuring local Aboriginal and African Dancers, a choir of singers accompanied by internationally acclaimed Yadaki (Digeridoo) player Ash Dargan.

Other highlights of the 2010 program include, Ceremony by Elders, Joining Forces Forum, a shared gourmet Feast featuring local produce, Children’s and Healing Villages, loads of creative and sustainable workshops plus food and craft stalls.

Strengthening personal relationships and encouraging cohesion between diverse communities through the expression of arts is the heart beat of this festival.  Important elements of the festival are;

·       Honour past and present Aboriginal custodians and create opportunities for them to share
and care

·       Establish and continue to build upon relationships between divers communities

·       Promote emotional, spiritual and physical healing through exposure to local, national and international health and well-being initiatives

·       Increase a greater participation in community arts whilst providing skill development opportunities for existing and emerging artists

·       Encourage local economic growth through promoting local business and artists

·       Promoting and celebrating Bruny Island and it’s people as an icon of innovation and creativity
